Dirty Dan Days on Sunday - April 2009 Photo GalleryGallery Home › Dirty Dan Days on Sunday - April 2009The Chuckanut Chowder Cookoff and the world's only Piano Race are the agenda for the second day of our festival. Perfect blue skies, temperatures almost up to 60 and warm sun made it a perfect day.Wendy and Stephanie going over something carefully. They were the principle organizers of the Cookoff. Gordy Tweit - on the right - taking photos of his friends John and Kim Ericson. In the foreground is David who is making a life documentary of Gordy. Gordy is our living treasure in Fairhaven. The thoroughbred racing pianos in the starting gate. On the left, the entry from the Fairhaven Market. Next is the WWU Viking Union entry. Then Fairhaven Runners and Walkers and on the far side, with their holstein cow stuff mascot firmly attached to their piano, is the Colophon Cafe. The race starts when two of the four team members of each team are started down Harris Avenue from 10th Street. The 8 runners race down to the pianos at 8th Street. The whole race takes about two minutes - much faster than the Kentucky Derby. The Fairhaven Runners guys got to their piano first and have a head start. Two teams are waiting for their runners. Up hill they go - with all their effort with the heavy pianos. Bowler hats fly and we hope someone retrieved them. The race finishes with the pianos almost roaring into the crowd at the finish line where 10th Street crosses. |
