Chuck and Dee - and their Village Books

Thanks in large part to Village Books, the Historic Fairhaven District is today a viable and sustainable business district.  And the thanks for that is to Chuck and Dee Robinson.  Their Village Books is without question the anchor store of Fairhaven.  It is a fun place to walk into.  There are three floors of books and the staff is expert and friendly. It embodies all the best of a locally owned retail shop.  Village Books has drawn people to the historic district on a steady year round basis for over two decades.  They opened as a very small, narrow book shop in June 1980.  By the mid 1980s they were our anchor - they were the shop that attracted people down to Fairhaven.  People would then shop the neighboring businesses. 

I remember when they opened.  They were right across the street from The Picture Show - our beloved art theater.  We would get out of the movie about 9 pm and they would be open.  Most other shops in Fairhaven would be closed at that late hour.  Many theater goers would saunter across 11th street to browse the books - and buy.  They purposely stayed open till the movies were over.  What a concept.  And they have continued for 30 years to look for ways to draw us into their book store to enjoy browsing and buying books.

Local news media are giving them recognition this month. It is well deserved.  And they will celebrate their 30 years on Sunday evening, June 20, in their bookstore.  It will be a chance for all of us who enjoy Fairhaven and their shop to thank them.
