Wow.  Welcome to our Fairhaven.  And to Fairhaven photographer Mark Turner’s fun take on our fun Historic District.  Yes, yes, that is one of Fairhaven’s colorful local characters.  But - where is he standing?  Answer follows.

Mark has his studio in Phyllis McKee’s Finnegan’s Alley building on Harris Avenue. He does portraits - and mostly outside his studio in our stunning northwest natural environment.  Check out his portrait website to see some of his fine work.  Want a portrait like this one?  Mark can do it for you.  He actually took the photo of moi in his studio.  He has special equipment to get this wild 360 degree shot from the curb in front of Good Earth Pottery at 10th and Harris.  And he stitched them all together for this final result.  Harris Avenue is to the left, going uphill towards 11th.  The visitor info gazebo is at the bottom of the photo, next to the Bead Bazaar.

Addendum:  Check out the Portrait Specials that Mark has for February - for a wild portrait like the one above or even something else wild - like the horn player on his special page.

Great Breakfasts in Fairhaven

<< Back to archives | Monday, January 23, 2012

There are several great places to have breakfast in Fairhaven.  With over 20 eateries, you would expect that.  Above, we have the usual Monday morning guys at Skylark’s Cafe on 11th, opening at 8 am.  There is also the Harris Avenue Cafe, also opening at 8 am, a half block away with both serving full breakfasts.  Then Avenue Bread, opening at 7 am, has their great sweet rolls and breakfast Eggenues - breakfast sandwiches.  Plus we have several coffee shops that are open by 7 and 8 am.

Have an iPhone or Android?  Fairhaven.com special formatted pages for smart phones will show you which of the restaurants that advertise here are open for every half hour of the day. Check to see who is open for breakfast or a late evening drink.  If they do not advertise here, we still show their phone number and you can call them.  Just click on the Dining category.  For iPhone users, you can create a quick and free web app which makes it quick to check for Fairhaven businesses anytime.

Robin, the owner of Tony’s Coffee and Harris Avenue Cafe, shovels his sidewalk even as more snow is on the way.  While some places closed on Wednesday with the bitter cold and icy streets, all will probably be open now as the weather moderates. The historic buildings sure look great with the snow and the ambience in the cozy coffee shops is best on such days.  But the forecast says the rains and temps in the 40s will return on Friday.

A sad tribute to Caleb “Flip” Kors

<< Back to archives | Saturday, January 14, 2012

Caleb “Flip” Kors, 10 years old and a talented juggler, died in an accident last week at his home.  Hundreds, no, thousands of us watched him perform and contributed a dollar to him.  Flip liked the Village Green and he entertained also at the Farmers Market in downtown Bellingham.  His death is a shock and sadness to many in our community.  And many have expressed their sorrow and respects by leaving memorabilia of Flip at the statue of Dirty Dan Harris on the Village Green.  I’m sure many of us in Fairhaven extend our sympathy and condolences to his family.

Fairhaven has several fine jewelry shops - and each offers original jewelry by Northwest artisans.  Russ, the owner of Silvery Moon on Harris Avenue, opens his shop this morning by carefully setting up his display counters.  A morning ritual for all jewelers.  Russ has over 30 years in the jewelry business which benefits his customers.  He can explain much about each piece he carries.  He describes his selection as “eclectic jewelry”.

His Fairhaven.com business listing says he has the “largest selection of hand carved Northcoast Native and First Nations silver jewelry north of Seattle, including the work of Lummi/Elwha artist Al Charles Jr. and Kwakiutl artist Chris Cook.”  You can see his listing by clicking the link just below.

We invite you to shop Fairhaven for special gifts all year long.  You will find unique one of a kinds at many shops.  There is not a single chain store in Fairhaven.  All shops and restaurants are locally owned.  They are also all locally managed.  And this means more attention to customers and their satisfaction.

Wrapping up a good year

<< Back to archives | Sunday, January 1, 2012

Cooperation between the Fairhaven Toy Garden and Paws Awhile gift shop resulted in volunteers gift wrapping Holiday presents.  It was one of many examples of businesses in Fairhaven cooperating on projects, events, promotions and having fun in the historic district.  It was a good year.

Here Pam Went wraps a present as a volunteer for the Humane Society.  Folks gave donations for the wrapping service during the four weeks leading up to Christmas - raising about $1,000.  Awesome.  Pam organized the event with the Toy Garden owners Robin and Tina, with some space by the front window at the toy shop.  I even found Robin wrapping gifts one day.

We thank everyone - merchants and residents - of Fairhaven for a wonderful year.  We bring our hopes and plans to 2012.

Our thanks to the Fairhaven Village Inn

<< Back to archives | Monday, December 26, 2011

This could be titled “Santa thanks the Fairhaven Village Inn”, but that would be a little presumptuous.  The Village Inn hosted Santa every Saturday from Thanksgiving until Christmas.  The Inn has this this huge chair - a throne actually - that looks like something out of a Maxfield Parrish painting.  Hotel owners Connie and Gene Shannon set this up in the lobby and Santa holds forth from a fine setting.  Above is what is on the seat when Santa is not there.  The Shannons also hosted the free horse drawn wagon rides each Saturday - and led several Fairhaven businesses in paying for the rides so kids and their parents could ride free.  These rides were really popular with the little ones.  The Shannons did this in the spirit of the holiday season.  We thank them.

Old Dirty Dan Harris is cast in bronze on the Village Green.  But through out the year he has been known to wear flowers on the brim of his bowler hat, and to drape a scarf around his neck and to generally enjoy light apparel.  We found him a couple days ago sporting the hat that Santa left behind at the Village Inn.  This statue has become the iconic symbol of Historic Fairhaven.  He was created by Bob McDermott and installed in Apri 2003 and instantly became a favorite of children.  He continues to charm them to this day and we thank Bob for that.

The Fairhaven Toy Garden, kitty corner from Village Books, was filled with Santa’s helpers yesterday.  All looking for great gifts for little ones.  Today in Fairhaven, most shops will be open until at least 6 pm for that last minute shopping.  This includes the Toy Garden and Village Books.

Yep, I’m talking to the men.  Fairhaven is great for last minute stuff.  Jewelry shops, books, two toy stores, a great kitchen and cooking shop, glass art, fine hand crafted pottery, and fine hand crafted wooden furniture, lamps, boxes and household accessories.  And much more.  Two flower shops for holiday flowers.  All within a couple historic city blocks.  All in less space than our local big mall. We invite you to Fairhaven for your last minute shopping.

Artwood Gallery is one of many Fairhaven shops staying open until 9 pm each Friday until Christmas.  Gallery manager Erica talks with shoppers browsing the beautiful custom wood furniture and accessories.  This is definitely not your average furniture store.  Every item is hand crafted in the Northwest.  All are one of a kind.  A fine shop to find a unique gift.

Carolers from Sehome High School sang on different street corners during the evening.  Next Friday, Dec 23, will see most shops open until 9 pm again.  And carolers will again be on the streets providing a festive air for shopping.

A youngster gets up close to enjoy the Holiday Trees setting on the stage of the Village Green.  All of Fairhaven, including shop windows, the street trees and the building roof lines are decorated with lights.  We invite you down for your Holiday shopping.

Whimsey is art, jewelry and gifts.  Open for over 8 years, it is the creation of Cami, shown at her counter helping a customer.  It is one of many unique, locally owned shops in Fairhaven.  It offers Cami’s selection of what is worth your attention.  And helps make shopping in Fairhaven so different from the malls or big box stores.

New to the Whimsey gallery is Love Heals, a line of unique charms, stones and chains from a family run company in Ojai, California.  A philanthropic business, Love Heals jewelry is handmade in the USA from ethically sourced materials.  Stop by the Whimsey gallery to create your own unique necklace, bracelet and earrings.

We invite you to Fairhaven for your gift shopping.  Most shops are open until 9 pm every Friday until Christmas.

Here are some photos of the fun in Fairhaven this past weekend as the Fairhaven Holiday Festival Opening days.  Above is Good Earth Pottery with its works representing more than 50 local artists.

The lights floating in the big tree behind Don White’s Skylark’s Cafe.  Don puts special effort into that tree each year - and wows us every time.  Walk up the cobblestone way to fully enjoy.

Jody Finnegan’s 12th Street Shoes always has sharp seasonal windows.

The Grinch is at Village Books most all day every Saturday and Sunday until Christmas.  Tim takes the photos - and they can be used for Holiday Cards or just family memories.

Paws Awhile is a gift shop that benefits the Whatcom Humane Society.  The gifts are for people, not pets, and they have a great selection for Christmas.

Magdalena’s Creperie on 10th Street had an eclectic and enjoyable photography exhibit by Marguerite Crooks and Kate Vredevoogd.  It may still be there.

Bellingham High School carolers were on the sidewalks on Saturday adding to the holiday cheer.

The Fairhaven Village Inn is hosting the horse drawn wagon rides through the historic streets each Saturday through Dec 24 from noon to 3 pm.  Free - and the kids love it.

We didn’t forget Santa.  Here he is in the gazebo at Harris and 10th.  He will also be at the Fairhaven Village Inn - seen in the photo down at the end of the block - every Saturday from noon to 3 pm until Christmas.

Santa assisted at 5 pm in lighting the Festive Forest on the Village Green stage - and the Bellingham High School ‘Showstoppers’ sang carols for the crowd.  It was a beautiful and fun event with music in the air.  Then the singers walked the sidewalks of the historic district, caroling the shoppers.  And the shops were lit with lights for the holidays and stocked with unique gifts for all.

Tomorrow is Shop Local day - and we just wanted you to know that every shop and restaurant in the historic district is locally owned.  Every one.  We hope many will come down on Saturday and have the most enjoyable shopping that can be imagined.

This coming Friday and Saturday evenings are the opening nights to the month long Fairhaven Holiday Festival.  For over 20 years the historic district has opened the Christmas shopping with all the shops staying open till 9 pm, serving refreshments, having artists in the galleries and shops, and with all the thousands of lights being turned on at the start of Friday evening.  There is no rushing in doors for bargains.  Instead there are many shops with unique Northwest crafted gifts, fine jewelry, art, clothing, shoes, books - and toys.  Fairhaven has two full line toy stores, plus other shops also carry many gifts for children.

Above is Village Books with the unique relaxed Fairhaven ambience in full view.  Casual browsing of good books.  Besides books, you can buy iPads, eBooks, children’s toys and more.  Upstairs is the cozy Book Fare Cafe.  Connected by a wide archway is Paper Dreams with a huge selection of holiday cards, calendars, picture frames, and most any gift or home decor item that involves paper.  Starting this Friday and every Friday until Christmas, most shops will be open until 9 pm.  Come on down to Historic Fairhaven, where shopping is more fun.

All no charge, courtesy of the Fairhaven Pharmacy, Quicksilver Photo Lab on Cornwall Avenue, and Gordy Tweit.  All three combine their resources each year to donate this to the community.  If you have a little one whose photo was taken by Gordy, you owe it to them to pick up the photos.  The photos will be treasured when they grow up.

Stop by anytime the Pharmacy is open.  The staff will help you.  Mon-Fri 9:30 am to 6 pm.  Sat 9:30 am to 4 pm.

Newly opened Serendipity, a women’s clothing consignment shop, is shown with owner Lisa Lee at the counter.  Lisa and her partners have a very successful shop in Kirlkland and have their new shop in Fairhaven packed with clothing from Kirkland and Bellevue.  Great values can be had on very high quality clothes.

She just opened last week and is right across 11th Street from Village Books and next to Fairhaven Runners.  And she is open 7 days a week.

She joins Southside Trends, also a women’s clothing consignment shop, located down on Harris Ave at 9th street to provide Fairhaven with two high value shops for women’s clothing.  Cathy Lee opened her shop in 2006.  Between these two shops, plus others that sell new clothes, shoes and accessories, Fairhaven offers outstanding values and choices for women looking for clothes.

Southside Trends has a large showroom that is always packed with all types of women’s clothing.

We invite you to visit Fairhaven for a great shopping experience. Free parking in the entire commercial district.

Fantastic fun with perfect weather for Halloween

<< Back to archives | Tuesday, November 1, 2011

As it has for several years now, the weather magically cleared for Halloween eve in Fairhaven.  And the kids dragged their happy parents up and down Harris Avenue and all the side streets.  The historic district was packed.  Above is 11th Street showing the 1800s buildings and the fun that everyone had.  It was just a fun and perfect evening for all - merchants, parents and the little ones.

Gordy Tweit took hundreds of photos of all the costumed folks at the Fairhaven Pharmacy, marking the 49th year he has done this.  All ages, from infants to grand folks, were enjoying Gordy’s generosity.  Gordy is the retired pharmacist and he is assisted each year by the current pharmacist Rob and the staff.  It is their annual gift to the Fairhaven community and we thank them for it.  Photos are no charge and will be ready for pickup in a few days.  We will post a notice at the top of this page when they are ready.

DAvid, of Papa’s Sweets, surrounded by potential tricksters as he doles out candies.

The Toy Garden invited the little ones and their parents into the store to get the treats.

Bay to Baker also invited the little ones in - and this guy is just really appreciative of that bit of candy.  Batman looks like he better get just as nice a piece, or else.

Jody at Southside Trends met them at the door.  Yep, the merchants really got into costumes also.

Nancy at Artwood Gallery - the lady bug gives a treat to superman.

James of Renaissance Celebration is his usual Halloween chair provides candy to a fellow who looks like he knows how to count candies - and James better get it right.

A look up Harris Avenue showing the crowded sidewalks.  Our hat is doffed to all the business owners and employees who prepared their shop windows, bought all the sweets, dressed up in costumes and made the afternoon a fun and exciting event for all the little ones - and also for their parents.

Treats in Fairhaven - Monday 3 to 6 pm

<< Back to archives | Sunday, October 30, 2011

Bring the little goblins and princesses and super heroes and ghosts to Fairhaven Monday afternoon from 3pm to 6 pm.  The historic buildings will be looming above the sidewalks - the shop windows are thick with cobwebs, spider webs - and pumpkins.  The business owners will be witches, frankensteins or just themselves - but they will have treats.  Lots of treats.

The pumpkin above is on an outside dining table at the Big Fat Fish restaurant on 12th Street.  Chef Jordan River did the incredible carving of a Dungeness Crab.  He has another of fish and is carving another tonight for placement somewhere in Fairhaven.  Oh, and another is down at Good Earth Pottery on Harris.  The chef has talents with those cooking knives.

Again this year, Gordy Tweit will be taking photos of all the little ones at the Fairhaven Pharmacy.  No charge - as it is a yearly tradition of the pharmacy.  Rob, Marci and the staff will be helping Gordy do this for the 49th year.  Yep, he started in 1963.  Yes, kids from that year are bringing their grand children for photos this year.

Finally - the weather forecast is for clearing skies and the rain stopping over the afternoon.  Might be a perfect crisp Halloween afternoon.

Nice work by S&S Concrete and the Bellingham Public Works Department.  They knew Halloween afternoon is big in Fairhaven and they did quick work this week replacing broken sidewalks on Harris Avenue.  Above is the final paving that was poured and smoothed this morning.  It will be ready for use on Friday.  What was really nice is how they kept access to the front doors of the shops all during the four days of work.  The S&S crew was just great.  Public Works informed business owners ahead of time and scheduled work to minimize disruptions.  Thanks to both.

And notice the last of the brick planters around the street trees are now gone.  It was time.  They were installed about 28 years ago by the Old Fairhaven Association and were expected to last 20 years.  Well, the growing trees were pushing the planters apart.  Other planters in the historic district have been taken out over the past 10 years.  Below is a photo of the street last week with the planters.  While it does not fully show, the planters were slowly coming apart.

Hats, orange goody bags, scary jewelry, Halloween cards - and who knows what else.  Only those who go inside Paper Dreams can really see what is in there.  Whooohooo.

Bring the little ones down for treats on Halloween - Monday, Oct 31 from 3 pm to 6 pm.  Most all the shops in the historic district will be providing treats.  Already windows are being decorated and spooky things are being rumored about. The historic streets and buildings are perfect for that old Halloween feeling.

In the window of Paper Dreams are reflected from across the street some of Fairhaven’s oldest buildings from 1888 and 1890. A tip of the hat to Kelly for the great window display.  Some of Fairhaven’s historic buildings are haunted.  But we are not telling which ones.  You can pick up a brochure at the information gazebo on Halloween that tells about the haunted ones.  the gazebo is located at 10th and Harris next to the Bead Bazaar.

Gordy Tweit will be taking photos at the Fairhaven Pharmacy - as he has done since 1963.  This will be his 49th year.

Fairhaven Bike & Ski celebrates 40 years - with a sale

<< Back to archives | Friday, October 14, 2011

John Hauter started Fairhaven Bikes next to Tony’s new coffee shop back in October 1971 - right where Harris Avenue Cafe is today.  Shown above, John is helping a good customer while Joey looks on from the other side of the service counter.  The place is packed with every type of bike for any type of riding by anyone of any age.  They are literally are hanging from the ceiling.

A big 40th Anniversary Sale continues through Sunday. Great bargains even on ski equipment which is surprising for this time of year.  John’s staff of experts handle everything that needs to be done for skis and bikes - and carry the clothing and accessories for both sports.  They also rent both - whether for hitting Mt Baker for the opening of ski season or a mountain bike ride on Chuckanut Mountain.

Fairhaven Bike & Ski is now the oldest business is Fairhaven still owned and managed by the original entrepreneur.  Fairhaven Pharmacy is our oldest business, going back over 100 years.  Tony’s Coffee started at the same time as Fairhaven Bike but has gone through several owners.  Haggen’s Fairhaven Market, Winn’s Drive In and Good Earth Pottery all started in the 1960s but have changed owners one or more times. Gallery West, The Chimney Sweep and Dos Padres all started in the mid 1970s.  John Hauter has the title of longest running owner of a business in Fairhaven.  The skiing and biking are probably one reason he looks much younger and is still fit and enjoying his work.

Local Politics at the Old Firehouse

<< Back to archives | Thursday, October 6, 2011

Hosting a forum for candidates this evening, the old Fairhaven Fire Station, now the Firehouse Performing Arts Center, provided a perfect cozy venue for candidates and voters.  24 candidates attended, including both from virtually every contested city and county contest.  While the seating capacity is modest, south side Bellingham politics is taken quite seriously and candidates know that.  The place was standing room only.

Shown above are the Bellingham City Council candidates for the four open seats of the seven on the council.  Two are running unopposed, but they showed anyway to present their views and answer questions.  The Coalition of Southside Neighborhoods produced the forum.  Besides Fairhaven, that includes South Hill, South, Happy Valley and Edgemoor.  It was a very well run forum and all enjoyed it.  A tip of the hat and thanks to all who helped put this on.  We had a perfect opportunity to compare candidates for all local offices.

If you are not familiar with the Firehouse, it was Bellingham’s #2 fire station for almost 80 years.  After a new station was built a few blocks away, it was renovated and is now a community meeting place, coffee shop, theater and classroom.  It hosts classes in dance, martial arts, relaxation, ballet and more.  And it is now showing movies once a month during the winter.  And tonight it hosted a very good political forum.  Thanks folks.

Farmers Market completes 2011 season

<< Back to archives | Wednesday, September 28, 2011

The Fairhaven Village Green always looks great in the late afternoon sun and today was especially so.  The rich colors of farm produce and the warm tones of the wooden pergola make a beautiful scene to the eye.  The camera struggles to convey the beauty. And today was the last Wednesday of the Farmer’s Market on the Green for this year.  It will hopefully return next spring.

Little known is that Bellingham’s Farmer’s Market started in Fairhaven.  Back in the 1990s, Ken Imus allowed his parking lot at 11th and McKenzie to be used each week by a local farmers group.  Their market became quite a success and city hall offered them $35,000 to move to downtown Bellingham.  They did and continued to grow - and about seven years ago they brought back a smaller market to Fairhaven.

The Village Green seems made for a farmer’s market with its beautiful wooden pergola and central lawn.  But it is a difficult fit because of the extra work setting up on the Green away from the farmer’s trucks, because of the very limited parking for customers, and because of the mid week times.  Each year it is a barely worthwhile event for the vendors and fewer farmers attend while more crafts, clothes and art vendors take their places.  And not all the pergola stalls are filled.  So each year brings new questions about the market.  We shall see about 2012.

Steampunk comes to Fairhaven

<< Back to archives | Thursday, September 15, 2011

Village Books hosted a Steampunk Masquerade this evening up on the mezzanine, where book readings happen.  Lindsey of VB hosted the event and was most appropriately attired.  Jonathan of The American Museum of Radio & Electricity had a Tesla coil for consenting individuals to partake of the electronic excitement.  (he is seen on the far right with his coil)

Steampunk? It is dressing and acting in the manner of a slightly over the top Victorian personality in the modern world - and - and this is important - and we have not advanced beyond steam power.  No electricity, no gas or diesel engines.  Thus, jetliners are powered by steam.  It is fun.  And that is the perspective of a 70 year old.  I’m probably off a bit.  Google the word and click to view Images.  Oh, and add in to all that - Science Fiction.  Jules Verne, you know.  (and don’t go out without your your touring goggles)

Fairhaven continues to have fun and try new things.  That is what we treasure and hope continues.  We invite you to Historic Fairhaven to have some fun.  Maybe the Sidewalk Sale and Salmon BBQ this Saturday.  Rain or shine - come on down for some fun.

By the way - doesn’t Andy, the Herald photographer, looks inadvertently Steampunk with his belt of lens holsters.  And check out the young guy on the far left with the gas mask and personal defense instrument.

Visitor Information Gazebo gets spruced up

<< Back to archives | Monday, September 12, 2011

Erica Hume, the manager of Artwood Gallery, is chagrined that we would want a photo of her.  But here she is, on her day off, putting on trim paint after she attached the new Visitor Info sign.  She and her husband Jim earlier installed a new step for more easily getting into the gazebo.

The gazebo is located at Harris and 10th, next to the Bead Bazaar.  It will be improved even more and information racks will be put inside it for 24 hour visitor information.  The sign points to the Bay to Baker Trading Company, only half a block down Harris, where our complete Visitor Info center is.  Bay to Baker is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm.

We thank Erica.  She is one of many business owners who volunteer in The Old Fairhaven Association to promote our district, preserve the historic buildings and help make Fairhaven a fun place to visit, work and shop.  The last thing she sought was publicity.  She didn’t even know I was down in Fairhaven early Monday morning.  So a bit if recognition is appropriate.  By the way, she also organizes the Holiday Walk in late November and the Solstice Walk in June.  - John Servais

Mount Bakery Fairhaven now open daily

<< Back to archives | Wednesday, September 7, 2011

A scratch bakery in Fairhaven. Mount Bakery is well known for their downtown Bellingham coffee shop and their outstanding baked sweets.  Well, they have moved their actual bakery to Fairhaven and are open every day of the week at 7 am until 1 pm.  They are located next to Trek Video, where Fairhaven Pizza was.

Above, Leah and Ed work at the counter while Jessica works at the back counter.  Coffee selection is limited to a fine drip grind now, but espresso will be available later this month.  It is a cozy shop, perfect for meeting a friend and enjoying a very fresh baked pastry.  Croissants, twists (made with croissant dough), scones, muffins, several kinds of cookies - and cinnamon rolls.  Really good cinnamon rolls.  And, what they are best known for, their desserts.  Truffles, tarts and cheesecakes.  Plus they offer custom cakes and desserts to order for any of your special occasions.

We welcome Leah and her crew to Fairhaven.

Fairhaven portrait photographer, Mark Turner, spent an hour the other day photographing the bricks in Fairhaven.  And we have plenty of old and new examples to explore.  Then he made another of his fun medleys set to music.  It is about 4 minutes long and a fun watch.  Could not help myself from trying to identify where each photo was taken.  I was trying to just enjoy the beauty and patterns.

Mark does portrait photography and has several books on flowers and nature.  You can find his books at - Village Books, of course.  We thank him for this bit of beauty.

Extra: Mark is doing a family portrait special on Sep 17 & 18 to benefit the Bellingham Food Bank.  This is half price for a family portrait with the entire session fee donated.  He has a page on his website with more information.

A restoration this summer of the brick facade of the 120 years old Knights of Phythias building has revealed again its detail and beauty.  The Phythias were a mens association in the 1800s and they met in a ballroom on the top floor.  Over the decades, the building has seen stores for hardware, clothing, variety, books.  Several other organizations met in the upper floors for many decades.  Today, Pacific Chef, Colophon and Drizzle occupy the building.

The upper floors have been vacant for decades.  And will remain vacant until the building is renovated.  It is the last major historic building in the historic district of Fairhaven that needs renovation.

Last Outdoor Movie of Summer this Saturday

<< Back to archives | Thursday, August 25, 2011

If you have not yet enjoyed an outdoor cinema on the Village Green this summer, then Saturday evening is your last chance.  Weather prediction is for a perfect summer day - something we have not had many of this year.  The movie is the classic “The Princess Bride” with live music by Big Sur starting at 7 pm.  The movie starts as soon as it is dark enough.

Bring a low back camp chair or blankets for comfort.  Always treats for sale before the movie.  Relax on the beautiful Village Green and enjoy a summer evening of music, people and a fun movie.  Donations for pre-movie seating is $5.  Big Sur is worth that by itself for their fine Indie, Folk and Popular music.

New benches enhance the historic district

<< Back to archives | Thursday, August 18, 2011

Relaxing on one of the new benches in Fairhaven, these two guys are enjoying the sunshine while their wives shop for clothes at Cathy Lee’s Southside Trends consignment shop at Harris and 9th Streets.  Cathy calls it the “Man Bench” and says it is popular.  Six benches were purchased a few years ago with a grant the Old Fairhaven Association received.  Two were never installed.  So a couple weeks ago, Brad Imus and a friend installed the last two.

Above, Brad installs the second bench at the corner of 11th and Mill Streets - next to the Fairhaven Toy Garden.  The members of the Old Fairhaven Association all volunteer their time, working to keep the historic district attractive.

While the stars are the 11 historic buildings, the Association has worked to make the district friendly for walking.  Benches help.  As do several new bike racks.  And the hanging baskets of flowers and the banners from light poles.  Even mundane items - such as the new trash receptacles installed last winter.  And there are other current projects the Association is working on.  All done by volunteers who have a sense of community.  Who give of their free time beyond work hours to make the historic district a fun place.  Thanks Brad.  And thanks to the others who make it happen.

Watering the hanging baskets of flowers

<< Back to archives | Friday, August 12, 2011

Jan Polen of the Fairhaven Lions Club waters one of the 80 hanging baskets of flowers in our historic district.  Yes, the watering cart - a converted golf cart - has been repaired and put back in service.  Early each morning, 7 days a week, all summer long, the Lions Club members take turns with the watering.  Without daily refreshments, the flowers would wilt and fade in a very few days.

Since about 1995, the Old Fairhaven Association donates each year to the Lions’ charity fund.  And the club members then volunteer their personal time for the watering.  It is one of many activities that help make Fairhaven a beautiful place to visit.  Twice this summer the watering has been stopped as the cart was stolen.  Twice we have recovered it, thanks to help from folks who live on the Bellingham southside, and twice we have repaired the damage and bought new parts for the cart.  It is now stored in what we hope is a secure location.

If anyone wants to volunteer to help the Lions Club with the watering, contact Jody Finnegan, the owner of 12th Street Shoes and the Association Vice President.  Jan Polen said they are open to non club members helping them.

Found.

<< Back to archives | Saturday, August 6, 2011

Found, again - truth to be said.  Here is our little, but expensive, watering cart - sans water tank, pump, some wiring and with a few broken things.  But otherwise in good shape.  Where we found it. We thank Amber Bone and Dennis Boher who both live up on the South Hill, for each spotting and reporting the cart. This afternoon the Fairhaven Lions Club volunteers are going to fix it, reinstall the water tank, put on a new pump, and have it ready for watering duty Sunday morning.  And, of course, we have a new storage location. Nuff said about that.

A number of people took time out from their summer plans over the past two days to help.  Constantine Papadakis of Dirty Dan Harris Steakhouse who helped with his pickup truck both days.  Jan Polen and Victor of the Fairhaven Lions Club.  Jody Finnegan of 12th Street Shoes for getting the news out, buying new parts and coordinating the rest of us.  And several others who were ready to help in the coming days.

There are more important things than hanging baskets of flowers.  And so we have not lost our perspective.  Much of all this is the damn vandalism of stealing and trashing an old, cherished and well cared for cart that is expensive to replace.  It is electric, recycled, carefully maintained, and provides water for beautifying plants in an historic shopping area.  And we put in many hours to keep our little historic district a pleasant place to walk, browse, shop and eat.  Thanks to all who helped or were ready to help.

Makeshift watering for historic district flowers

Every day - the flowers need watering every day.  Or they quickly start suffering and no amount of watering later will bring them back.  As you may have learned in the news today, the watering golf cart was stolen again.  And this time we don’t think it will be found.  The thieves ripped the water tank off and threw it in the brush on their escape.  Watering was missed on Friday - but this morning we have a makeshift arrangement.

Here Victor of the Fairhaven Lions Club waters while Constantine Papadakis of Dirty Dan Harris Steakhouse has volunteered his pickup and his time to get the watering done.  There are 48 flower baskets throughout the historic district and it will take these two till late morning to water them all.  The arrangement for years has been the Old Fairhaven Association contributes a few thousand dollars each year to the Lions Club for their charities - and the Club members, who are mostly retired, volunteer their time to water the flowers early every morning all summer with the efficient golf cart.  The electric golf cart was fitted out so one person could drive and water without strain.  You can see the water tank in the bed of Constantine’s pickup.

The Association is working to replace the golf cart asap - hopefully by later next week.  We would appreciate if anyone with an open pickup could volunteer to drive one of the Lions Club volunteers on any of the coming mornings.  Sunday through at least Wednesday.  7:00 am until about 10 am.  If you can, call John Servais at 920-8223, or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).  If you can do one day, that would help spread the work.  Thanks.

Tour de Whatcom starts from Historic Fairhaven

<< Back to archives | Saturday, July 30, 2011

At 7:30 this morning, almost 300 riders begin their 105 mile ride around Whatcom County.  On, may we point out, a beautiful sunny, blue sky and warm day.  At 10 am about 200 riders will start on the 50 mile tour and at 11:30 about 300 will start on the 25 mile mini tour of our county.  The staggered times provide for most to return somewhat together from Ferndale in the afternoon from 1 to 3 pm. The 105 mile route takes the most scenic roads and most of the small towns in the county.  And Fairhaven is a fine place for relaxing with food and drink after a energetic day.

We thank Todd Williams for realizing this idea and for putting it on each year.  This is the sixth Tour.  And also the volunteers who work with him plus the sponsors who provide vital services to make the Tour a fun and safe event.  You can visit his Tour de Whatcom website and learn more.  It is always the last Saturday in July.

Fiddlin Fox brings Dancing to the Green

<< Back to archives | Sunday, July 24, 2011

The Folichon Cajun Band from Seattle provided great dancing music this afternoon on our Village Green.  It was a free concert - and included free dancing lessons from a professional instructor.  For anyone who wanted to dance or learn to dance.  The brick patio in front of the stage provides a great surface for stepping out.  I’ve no idea who these two are, but they were one of several couples kicking it up to some fine Cajun music.

Next Sunday afternoon, July 31, from 2 to 5 pm, is the last event this summer.  Balkanarama from Seattle will provide Gypsy music from the Balkans.  This will be very up-beat music - high energy and with a lot of emotion.

Linda Fox provides this free gift to our community each year in July.  She loves dancing and feels the Village Green is a beautiful venue for it.  She brings in outstanding bands from around the Pacific Northwest and then hires dance instructors.  We thank her.  And you can also by taking advantage of the music and dancing next Sunday.

Or you can settle back in a camp chair and just enjoy the music without the dancing.

Found.  The modified golf cart used for watering the hanging flower baskets in Fairhaven has been found.  In the corner of a church parking lot a few blocks from where it was stolen.  Obviously used for a joy ride.  Above, from left, with the newly found watering cart, are Jody Finnegan of the Old Fairhaven Association (OFA), and Victor Cuellar and Jan Polen of the Fairhaven Lions Club.  Jody, who is Chair of the Beautification Committee of the OFA looks really relieved to find the cart.  She is.

Whoever took the cart joy riding probably figured it would be found and probably also figured no harm done.  Wrong.  The trauma of two days without the cart was on the 80 hanging basket flowers which need watering every day.  The OFA was scrambling with the help of many other groups and people to do watering this afternoon with buckets and whatever to keep the flowers healthy.  While the cart is missing its hose and watering wand, they are being bought and installed as I post this and watering will start this afternoon.  Whew.

The Bellingham Fairhaven Lions Club members have volunteered their time every morning of the summer for many years watering the flowers.  In return, the OFA makes an annual contribution to the Lions charity fund.  But the people involved - by the Lions and the OFA - all volunteer their time.

Thanks to everyone who responded to look for the cart, offer temporary watering equipment and volunteer to help in any way to water the plants.  And thanks to Jody for taking time away from her 12th Street Shoes to lead the efforts to both water the flowers and find the cart.  Shakespeare said it.  Alls well that ends well.

Anyone seen a green golf cart?  Not on a golf course.

<< Back to archives | Wednesday, July 20, 2011

The converted golf cart used for watering the 80 hanging flower baskets each day - has been stolen.  It was driven from its secluded location behind a building sometime Monday night.  As it has an electric motor, it could be driven away quietly.  The Old Fairhaven Association (OFA) members spent Tuesday checking for any possible person who may have been servicing it or using it - and no one has. OFA officers have now reported it to the police.

If anyone has knowledge of where the cart is, please call Village Books and tell anyone answering the phone the location.  We will go get it and ask no questions.  Phone 360 671-2626.  Please.  It is a 4 wheel green golf cart with a white plastic canopy and a windshield.  There was a big water tank on the back, but it may have been taken off.

The cart was purchased used in 2006 for $6,200 and outfitted with a water tank and watering hose.  The senior members of the Fairhaven Lions Club volunteer to water the baskets every morning - and the OFA makes a yearly contribution to the Lions charitable fund.  This has worked for perhaps 20 years.

The OFA is scrambling to see the flowers are watered.  Even skipping two days watering can result in the flowers slowly wilting and not recovering all summer.  The baskets hang from the light poles on all the streets in the historic district and add their beauty to the ambience of Fairhaven.  We are in danger of losing some or many of the flowers.

This is not the stolen golf cart, but the one we used previously.  But it shows Gene Saggs of the Fairhaven Lions watering the flower baskets a few years ago.  You can see the special long watering system that allows reaching up to the baskets.  The flower baskets are watered every morning all summer long to keep them looking full and beautiful.

Finally - plenty of tables and seats for our favorite Fairhaven pizza place.  Fairhaven Pizza has moved to the old Flats Tapas restaurant location right across the street from Skylark’s Cafe on 11th Street.  They moved from their many years location next to Trek Video.  As you can see above, while Kat takes orders, they are being welcomed by all in Fairhaven.

They are now open for lunch every day and stay open till “9 ish in the evening” as owner Tom likes to say.  They are closed Mondays.  They still offer single slices for lunch with a good choice of toppings.  The menu is the same.  And their calazones are still just as good.  The historic district has needed a good pizza place since Stanello’s closed two years ago. One could even say since Stan moved out of the historic core about 15 years ago.  Now the area down in the core offers a wide range of choices with 8 restaurants within less than a block of the corner at 11th and Harris.

At Fairhaven Pizza, you can dine inside, at either of two outside tables or, when crowded or for more privacy, the balcony with several quiet tables.  A great place now located in the historic Nelson Block bank building that was built over 100 years ago.  We invite you to Fairhaven for fun, shopping and dining.

BALLE, a national organization of local businesses, held their annual conference in Bellingham this week.  And held their closing reception and dinner on the Village Green.  We in Fairhaven were pleased they chose our historic district.  And we wonder if even their members realize that every single business in Fairhaven is locally owned.  Not a single chain eatery or shop.  Our bookstores, coffee shops, clothing and shoe stores, art galleries, restaurants, jewelry shops, pharmacy, sporting equipment - all of them locally owned and managed.

How many enjoyed dinner on the Green?  We were told over 300.  And the Bellingham Parks Department allowed them to serve wine and beer.  A first - and a nice precedent for future events.

Dedication of “Chinese Deadline” Plaque

<< Back to archives | Wednesday, June 8, 2011

Professor Ning Yu speaks about the Chinese inscriptions he wrote on the new granite plaque at the dedication ceremony this afternoon in Fairhaven.  The Old Fairhaven Association replaced a historical plaque that remembered the “Chinese Deadline” of a hundred years ago - a city law that forbid Chinese from going up Harris Avenue beyond 8th Street.  Hundreds worked in the salmon canning plants by the waterfront and were not allowed to go into the commercial district of Fairhaven.  Today, Mayor Dan Pike - seen by the light pole - offered an apology to the Chinese Community.

This photo shows the plaque and its location next to the sidewalk where it crosses Padden Creek at 8th Street.  The original plaque was installed by Tyron Tillson, a Fairhaven historian, back about 1990.  It was mysteriously removed about two years ago.  Over the past months, the Old Fairhaven Association has worked with the Northwest Chinese Cultural Association to replace the plaque.  Xinrong Lynch, president of the Chinese Association, spoke and emphasized that we should know the past but we should focus on the future with all groups tolerating and accepting each other.  This was echoed by other speakers.

The original plaque wording is shown - and below is the added wording about the the mayor’s apology.  Along the sides is the Chinese written by Ning Yu which is a saying from Confucius and roughly translated says; Study the past if you would know the future.  Over 70 people attended the ceremony and it was a festive event.  The sun came out as the ceremony was to begin - a fine portent for the future.
Our thanks to Tip Johnson for the photos.

Three of the “Girls” get their passports stamped at Skylark’s Cafe. Pink was the color of the evening all through the historic district.  By taking passports to participating businesses, the ladies encountered specials, fun shopping, delicious treats, and discovery of new shops and restaurants.  Filled passports qualified them for the drawings at the end of the evening.

The “Judge’s Choice” award went to the Colophon Cafe in a unanimous decision for a tantalizing chowder that included bits of coconut - which is surprising because two of the judges don’t like coconut.  That is a chowder to try.  Second in the Judges category was the Fountain Bistro and third was again Chuckanut Brewery - both from the heart of Bellingham.

The Northwest Ballet gave a 20 minute presentation from the upcoming “Emerald Bay” ballet about the relations between the Chinese and white settlers in 1800s Fairhaven.  The ballet will be performed at the Mt. Baker Theater on June 10,11 and 12.  See the ad in the right side column for a link to their website and to purchase tickets.  The Old Fairhaven Association is a sponsor and supporter of this ballet which uses the early history of Fairhaven to create a drama in the style of Romeo and Juliet. Above is shown the beautiful dancing by Chinese dancers from the ballet.

The ninth Dirty Dan Days concluded with a day of warm sunshine - the warmest day since last September.  The historic district was jumping with folks enjoying the incredible weather.  We thank Stephanie Johnson and Doug Borneman for staging this super two day event for at least the fifth year now.

Haggen Fairhaven Market wins Piano Race

<< Back to archives | Saturday, April 30, 2011

Their faces as they approach the yellow finish line tape tells it all.  The guys from Haggen Fairhaven Market ran a stellar race and it gave them their first victory after several years of hard persistent efforts with no win.  The race involves teams of four starting at 10th and Harris, running downhill - down Harris - to their pianos waiting for them at 8th Street and then pulling and pushing their pianos back up to 10th.  It takes less time than the Kentucky Derby but the crowd of over a thousand lining Harris Avenue is just as excited and noisy as any at Churchill Downs.

Taking second was Fairhaven Runners - seen just behind the winners - who were the winners the past two years.

Dirty Dan Days continues Sunday, with the 1800s Dress Contest at 12:45, the Chuckanut Chowder Cookoff from 2 to 4 pm, and the Dirty Dan Look-a-Like contest at 3 pm.  The weather is perfect for our annual celebration of the founding of Fairhaven in 1883 by Dirty Dan Harris.  We invite you to join us in Historic Fairhaven.

Dirty Dan Days

The Trout Toss competition. You’ve no doubt watched the salmon tossing at the Pike Place Market - and maybe seen the Salmon Toss competition at Dirty Dan Days.  Well, this year trout toss was added for the younger ones as trout are much smaller than salmon.  As you can see - click the photo for a larger view - the trout are pretty good sized and still a hefty throw for the really young ones.  Yep, the salmon toss was also held today - but the trout toss drew the bigger audience.  Doesn’t matter who won as all gave it their best - but will say that it came down to two teams who both kept catching as they were moved back a couple feet for each next toss.

Knute made his Paella again this year - and he even brought a second pan so he could keep it going continuously.  Really a great taste treat.  We’ll give Knute a free plug here - as you can contract with him to come to your party and cook up this for you.  Check http://www.paellaworks.com for full information.

Dirty Dan Days concludes today with the piano race at 3:45 pm.  Check back here for a photo.

Sunny & Warm predicted for Dirty Dan Days

<< Back to archives | Thursday, April 28, 2011

This Saturday and Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm each day, is the most fun festival of the year in Fairhaven - Dirty Dan Days.  Doug Borneman, shown above helping hand out bowls and bread during the Chuckanut Chowder Cook-Off last year, is the maestro who has developed this into a super event of the Pacific Northwest.  This is Doug’s last year managing and it promises to be as much fun as last year.

A short ballet presentation from “Emerald Bay”, a ballet about Fairhaven’s 1800s history with the Chinese - will be staged each day by the Northwest Ballet on the stage at the Village Green.  Also on Saturday is live music all day, Salmon tossing contest - and trout tossing for the little ones, cupcake eating contests, lots of fun booths on the Village Green, and the Piano Race at 3:45 pm.

The Chuckanut Chowder Cook-Off is the big atrraction on Sunday.  This year there are 12 restaurants competing for the Peoples and Judges prizes.  Can anyone beat repeat winner Skylark’s?  Also on Sunday is the Dirty Dan look-a-like contest and an 1800s dress contest. In the morning off Boulevard Park is the start of the Dan Harris Challenge rowing race to Chuckanut Bay.

The full schedule of both days is posted.  Plus all the shops and restaurants in Fairhaven will be open for you to walk about and discover.

(hey to any restaurant owners:  There is room for a couple more chowder cook-off contestants.  Great publicity for your business.  Contact Doug at (360) 733-2682.)

Salmon released by Larrabee School students

<< Back to archives | Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Padden Creek receives another little - under 2 inches - Coho salmon fry as it goes sliding down the plastic half tube.  On Tuesday, about 100 students from Larrabee grade school hiked over to Padden Creek in Fairhaven and released 120 of the little fry that they had raised from eggs since January.  The salmon will stay in the stream a year, then head out to the ocean for two years and return in November 2014 to hopefully spawn.  The release took place Tuesday and is a modest but valuable step to get our wild salmon cycle viable again.

Wendy Scherrer, in the red coat, is the spark behind this project.  No surprise there.  Teachers Jenny Pittis and Lisa Conlin, along with fisher Bret Simmons, guided the students in raising the salmon.  Even the water in their aquarium was taken from Padden Creek so the salmon will imprint on it for returning from the sea.  The whole project is called “Salmon in the classroom” and informally called “Salmon in your backyard” because of Padden Creek literally flowing behind many residences on Bellingham’s south side.  All part of the fun of living in Fairhaven.

Padden Creek flows past the historic district and into Bellingham Bay down at 8th and Harris.  There is a walking trail along most of the creek.

A wave to the camera as the schooner Spike Africa leaves the dock before the sails are raised for a spanking two hour cruise on Bellingham Bay.  A dozen Fairhaven businesses sponsored twenty some winners of a drawing to this cruise.  Spike Africa is a 62 foot schooner that sails out of Friday Harbor for multi day cruises of the islands and was here in Fairhaven for the Bellingham Bay Rendezvous held today at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal.

Fairhaven business sponsors for the 24 tickets were:  Jacaranda Development (Ken and Brad Imus); Rebecca’s Flower Shoppe; Artwood Gallery; 12th Street Shoes; Village Books and Paper Dreams; Fairhaven Village Inn; Bellingham Tennis Club and Fairhaven Fitness; Renaissance Celebration; Good Earth Pottery; The Silvery Moon; Southside Trends; Fairhaven.com and Paws Awhile.

The highlight of the day was unveiling the new homeport name “Bellingham WA” on the stern of the schooner Zodiac.  Above, Port Commission President, Mike McAuley speaks to the crowd.  To his right is Karl Mehrer, the senior Captain of the Zodiac and Gordie Tweit, our much loved retired Fairhaven Pharmacist.  Gordie pulled the cord that unveiled the new name.

The new wording on the stern of the 127 foot schooner Zodiac now calls Bellingham her homeport.  Many of the folks going out on this sail were sponsored by the Whidbey Island Bank, which has a branch office in Fairhaven.  It was a great day on the Fairhaven waterfront and we thank the Port of Bellingham for hosting this fabulous day of big cruising boats - both power and sail.

Dee Robinson drew the winning entries from a classic old bowler hat, while Chuck Robinson firmly held the hat.  12 winners got two tickets each for a sail on the 62 foot schooner Spike Africa on Saturday noon.  (photo of Spike just below)  It is all part of the Bellingham Bay Rendezvous this weekend at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal - but we all know it as the Alaska Ferry Terminal.

From 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday there will be big beautiful boats to tour.  Craft vendors, marine paintings, toy boat building for the little ones - a fun day on the Fairhaven waterfront. Click the link on the left to see all the details.  And we’ll see you down there.

The 24 free cruises were sponsored by 13 Fairhaven businesses, with Ken and Brad Imus and their Jacaranda Development donating half.  Fairhaven business owners hope to see more schooners and charter vessels visiting our safe Fair Haven harbor this summer.  We welcome all the beautiful boats that will be visiting tomorrow.

Papa, aka David Starr, has finished renovating the candy shop space next to Three French Hens and opened his very unique shop.  He combines incredible chocolates with coffees and other unique candies.  This week he will be adding ice cream cones, shakes and who knows what other fun, impulse and satisfying treats to tempt us in his shop door.  Where exactly is he?  How about right across the street from Tony’s Coffee.  Now you know.

We invite you to slip in the door and check out his shop.  This is the sort of place we love in Fairhaven and I think it will evolve as Papa learns what we and visitors to Fairhaven want for quick treats.

New Fairhaven TV ad debuts this week

<< Back to archives | Saturday, April 2, 2011

Fairhaven advertising is assuming spring is here and our spring getaway TV ad will start playing to Seattle and Vancouver residents this week.  We have expanded it to include scenes of mountain biking and kayaking - two outdoor sports that we have some of the finest in the state and maybe in the US.

click the photo to see the video.

The ad highlights how easy it is to get to Fairhaven with Amtrak stopping literally in Fairhaven and trains from Seattle only $21 one way.  It shows scenes of the Chrysalis Hotel, Book Fare restaurant, mountain biking on Cleater Road, kayaking in Pleasant Cove, the Village Green and a picnic at Marine Park.  Plus walking the historic streets - all in 30 seconds.  Max Kaiser and his crew at Hand Crank Films right here in Bellingham produced the ad.  Enjoy.

You can watch and listen to this and earlier ads for Fairhaven by scrolling down the left column and clicking on the graphic ad with old Dan Harris tipping his hat.

Actually, they opened two weeks ago.  The long winter is over.  Today the staff - including Carl and Karol - were busy planting seeds, caring for tiny seedlings and generally filling several greenhouses with new plants.  They are open every day except Sunday and have vegetable and flower plants by the thousands.  Yes, Carl and Karol are retired - except in the spring when all expeerienced hands are needed.

Above, Forest hangs new baskets with freshly planted flowers where they will wait for buyers. And spread all along the floor of the greenhouse are starters for local gardeners.

They are open 8 am to 6 pm, Monday thru Friday and 8 am to 5:30 pm on Saturday.  We invite you to stop by and get some new plants for your own garden or flower bed.  And believe that spring is finally here.

Grand opening on Monday at Book Fare Cafe

<< Back to archives | Saturday, March 19, 2011

A really fine cozy restaurant on the mezzanine level of Village Books, Book Fare has recently been bought by Charles Claassen.  And Monday, March 21, he invites us all to - well here are his words:  “Come enjoy free food, live musical entertainment, and new products and menu items throughout the day.”

The Book Fare Cafe has no street presence.  But it does have one of the nicest views from the tables of any eatery in Fairhaven - looking over the Village Green and allowing the afternoon sun to stream in the windows.  And it is open for lunch and dinner every day of the week.  Book Fare Cafe’s menu is based on seasonal and regionally appropriate ingredients. The cafe features light fare such as panini sandwiches, soups, salads, artisanal scratch-baked goods, gluten-free treats, wine, beer, coffee, tea, and a full line of espresso drinks.

Afternoons it is very popular for meeting friends over a coffee, tea or glass of wine.  Above, Ruth enjoys a book and refreshment on a mid afternoon.

Charles was the chef at the North Cascades Institutes learning center on Lake Diablo.  He has over twenty years of chef experience and brings a fresh menu and ideas to his new restaurant.

Book Fare is open 10am-7:30pm Monday through Saturday, and 11am-6pm on Sundays.

Schooner Zodiac featured on magazine cover

<< Back to archives | Thursday, March 3, 2011

The 160 foot long schooner Zodiac has moved to Fairhaven on a permanent year round basis. Fairhaven stands to benefit hugely from this move with more visitors coming here to enjoy all the outdoor recreation we have to offer.

And so we are planning a celebration.  The stern - the back end - of the Zodiac shows the city she calls home. On Saturday, April 16, that name will change to Bellingham - from Seattle. Shortly after noon, we will have a dedication ceremony, complete with speeches and live music, to unveil the new name on the stern of the Zodiac. From 9 am to 4 pm, we will have a fun day of boating activities at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven. We invite everyone. We will have full information right here on Fairhaven.com under the events tab.

The event is being hosted by the Port of Bellingham and the prime sponsor making this all possible is Whidbey Island Bank, with the Fairhaven Branch manager Dave Hannah as the lead organizer of this event.  Plan to attend.

And pick up a copy of Adventures NW magazine, which is published right here in Fairhaven by Paul Haskins and Alaine Borgias. The new issue sports a Zodiac cover (shown here) and a story about sailing aboard the schooner. The spring issue has just been distributed to display racks all over Whatcom County, nearby counties, and and the entire region. Be sure to pick it up, as it has some great articles and photos of outdoor fun near Fairhaven and in other parts of the Pacific Northwest.

Jaimie Berg is moving on - closing Fun to Shop

<< Back to archives | Monday, February 28, 2011

Jaimie Berg, our hula hooping phenom - is hitting the road to try her luck with her hoops.  How?  Well, she hopes by teaching and demonstrations.  She will travel with her mother Bria, shown above.  Last night they had champagne toasts with friends as they closed down her business in Sycamore Square.  Her charming business, Fun to Shop, has sold retro women’s clothing and accessories for 13 years.  They will have a final sale today, Monday.

Jaimie is spectacular with the hula hoop and has often entertained those visiting Fairhaven with free shows on the sidewalks.  See the photo below from 2009 on Halloween.  We will miss her as she has helped give Fairhaven the fun and eclectic ambience that we treasure. We wish her the best as she follows her dreams.

Netflix can’t do that for you. You can phone in your pizza order to Fairhaven Pizza and pick it up after selecting a movie at Trek Video.  We all know there is always parking right in front or next to these two well liked Fairhaven businesses.  Your pizza can be ‘Take Out’ or it can be ‘Take and Bake’.  And Trek has the largest Foreign Film selection in Bellingham.  Plus all the latest releases.

Above Rob of Trek and Dan of Fairhaven Pizza give us a wave.  I had 10 seconds to shoot this photo as they had customers and that car wanted that parking spot.  But this combination of pizza next door to video rental has long seemed to me such a convenient way for us to create a fine evening at home when the urge hits us.  Both businesses provide excellent and quick service.

Links below to their businesses.  They are in the little shopping mall between Harris and Mill Avenues at 13th Street. But you knew that.  - John Servais

Trek Video - open to 11 pm Fri & Sat and to 10 pm all other nights.

Garage Sale at Village Books

<< Back to archives | Friday, February 18, 2011

Today - Saturday - from 11 am to 4 pm.

The second day of this sale. Still available are book shelves, display fixtures, books and much more.

As co-owner Chuck Robinson put it:
“We’ve cleaned out some storage areas and are clearing out some overstock and having a giant garage sale this weekend (Friday & Saturday, 11am ~ 4pm) in the garage below the bookstore - enter from Mill Ave.  There are hundreds of books at 99 cents, $1.99 & $2.99; bins of items from Paper Dreams for as little as 50 cents; and a large number of display fixtures and bookshelves.  There are some good bargains and great reads.  Come by and take a look.”

We don’t normally post news of garage sales, but Village Books has been a great supporter of Fairhaven.com since we began.  As the sun comes up this morning, it actually promises to be a very sunny day.  Remember - the sale is through the door on Mill Avenue - the side of the store.

Raining Queen Diane oversees Rain Fest

<< Back to archives | Saturday, February 12, 2011

Queen Diane presided over a very blustery Official Pacific Northwest Rain Festival today.  With wind gusts of over 40 mph, the festival went on.  Some even thought they felt a drop or two of rain.  Above, the Raining Queen Diane pets the pug to see if it is wet or dry.  She pronounced it dry to the cheers of all present.  Dirty Dan Harris, aka Jim Rich, told us that meant only 8 more weeks of rain before spring.  All cheered again, for no particular reason.  Thats Dirty Dan at the microphone.  Others are Jody, on the left, and Taimi holding the pug ( it is her pet, after all) from the Ladies of the Evening Society - a very upright association of Historic Fairhaven.  The smiling top hatted fellow is Rich Bulman, a local artist of fine repute.  Click the photo for a larger view.

Lauren reads her poem for the annual Rain Poetry contest.  She won.  Actually, both she and the other contestant won first prize.  The judges decided what the heck, both poems were very good, were original and were about rain.  Fairhaven merchants donate the prizes and they are placed on a table.  Winners of the various contests simply look them over and choose something they can use.  It works. Another contest was a children’s rain gear modeling - but they were too shy for a decent photo.  They still got prizes.

This was the 9th annual Rain Fest, first started when the Village Green was almost finished in 2003.  It is a fun but short - would you believe half hour - event that helps break the monotony of the gray rainy days of our Pacific Northwest winter.  After the Fest, all in attendance scatter to the fine coffee houses and wine bars of Fairhaven.  The Ladies of the Evening Society have participated each year and have decided to join Diane and help organize it next year.  It should be fun and we look forward to it.

Schooner Zodiac New Masts Arrive in Fairhaven

<< Back to archives | Thursday, February 3, 2011

The Schooner Zodiac, based down at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal on the Fairhaven waterfront, took delivery of two new masts today.  Big masts.  The main mast is 114 feet long and the foremast is 93.  We see them arriving by truck from Aberdeen where they were made on a huge lathe.  The main mast is from a single Douglas Fir tree specially selected near Medford, Oregon.

The masts will be “stepped” on the Zodiac in March and she will be ready for her charter season in April.  The Zodiac recently moved to Fairhaven from Seattle.  She is one of the oldest and longest schooners in the United States.  Yes, we are delighted and proud she has chosen Fairhaven to sail out from.  We are planning a special event with the Zodiac for this spring - so, check here about mid February for news.  And check their website - and plan a great summer vacation for yourself and your close ones.

Historic street lights get new globes

<< Back to archives | Sunday, January 9, 2011

With the 1890 era Pythias Building as a background, Dwaine of Bellingham Public Works installs new white globes on one of our historic styled lamp posts.  In all, 27 of the double light posts had their globes replaced.  The old globes, some even more crudded that the one shown, had reduced light output and did not light the streets sufficiently.  Safety is still important even in an historic district.  The first lights in Fairhaven in the 1890s were probably gas fired.  But these posts go very well with our historic district, even though they are more of a 1920s theme.

We thank the Public Works Department, and especially Clark Williams, for working with the Old Fairhaven Association to find the right globes and upgrade the lights for the safety of all.

Tim Imus, Fairhaven building owner, has died

<< Back to archives | Friday, December 3, 2010

It is sad to report that Tim Imus, son of Ken and Barbara Imus, died last night.  Tim owned buildings on Harris and McKenzie in Fairhaven and has managed them for many years.  He was very well liked by the business owners in Fairhaven who knew him.  He served on the Old Fairhaven Association Board of Directors for several years.  Tim was 56 years old.  He grew up in California and worked there for many years there before moving to Fairhaven in 2000.  Tim worked with his brother Brad and father Ken on the revitalization of Fairhaven.  He was easy to meet and enjoyable to be around.  I will miss him and he will be missed in Fairhaven.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorials be made to Hospice House, 800 E. Chestnut St. Suite 1A, Bellingham, WA 98225, website Whatcom Hospice.  A celebration of Tim’s life will be announced at a later date.  You may view photos of Tim and share memories with the family at http://www.westfordfuneralhome.com

Shopping fun & relaxed at Holiday Walk A’bout

<< Back to archives | Friday, November 26, 2010

The Garden Room shop was lively Friday evening as Fairhaven celebrated its annual Holiday event.  This shop featured silk scarves by Rene Sherrer-Daly.  This was typical of other stores with people enjoying themselves as they shopped.  Every shop and restaurant in Fairhaven is locally owned and managed which means there are many unique gift selections available and with many local artists and crafts persons products.

Download an easy to print PDF file of the above map.  It lists all 24 shops and restaurants, tells what artist or event is at each, and shows where they are on a map.  A handy guide to take with you when you visit.  Plus these maps are available in Fairhaven at all participating shops and restaurants.

Saturday evening promises to be another fun evening for shopping in Fairhaven, as the weather forecast is for no wind and little chance of rain.  Here are a few photos of Friday evening, the first of the two night Walk About.

We think this is the 20th annual Holiday Walk About - but Erica of Artwood Galleries, who has been organizing them for over 10 years, is not sure what year we started.  The two day event has gone by different names over the years - Gallery Walk,  Tour d’Art - and always features artists or events in the shops and the historic district decorated with thousands of lights. Over 20 participating businesses will be open until 9 pm again on Saturday evening. We invite you down for your holiday and christmas shopping.

Lighting of the trees on the Village Green at 5 pm was accompanied by live music.  The trees form a decorative touch to the Village Green and the project has been led by Cami, the owner of Whimsey, a jewelry, art and gifts shop on 10th Street.

Fiona Starr was not only showing her drawings of pets but was also working on new art at Paws Awhile on 10th Street.  This shop is filled with general gifts year round with the proceeds benefitting the Whatcom Humane Society.

Looking down Harris Avenue, with only some of the lights visible.  The brick stripe across the intersection is a reminder of when trolly tracks went all the way down Harris to the bay.

Shoes - lots of women’s shoes - are at 12th Street Shoes.  For the Holiday Walk About, owner Jody is featuring a shoe design contest.

Sycamore Square is decorated for the holidays.  The huge atrium rising up the full four stories is beautiful anytime of year.  Below is a large group enjoying a meal at Mambo Italiano restaurant.  At Mambo’s you can dine in any of three areas, each with a different ambience.

Building a snowman on the Village Green behind Village Books.  All is well in Fairhaven.  Shops and restaurants are open.  And the historic district is alive on this sunny day.  We had a few inches of snow fall overnight - and it transformed our little historic district.  We thank Ray Dunn, who lives in one of the condos in Fairhaven, for these photos.

We remind you that on this coming Friday and Saturday evenings will be the 20th annual Holiday Walk About with most of the shops open till 9 pm.  Click on the events to learn more.

Street work finishes this coming Week

Crosswalk striping is the final stage of completing the rebuilt 12th Street through our commercial district.  Above, Dixie watches over the safety of Mitch who is prepping the street surface for the crosswalk white stripes.  The final work should be done this coming Monday.

Note the very cool brick strip down the center of Harris Avenue.  That was all under a few inches of asphalt for the past few decades.  It is left over from the trolley tracks back in the 1920s. Stephanie Johnson, the President of the Old Fairhaven Asociation, requested the city replace the bricks to be visible with the street reconstruction - and Public Works agreed to do just that.  RAM Construction workers, with Mitch overseeing the work, did a beautiful job or taking them out without damaging them, building the concrete retaining strips and putting them all back down.  Fairhaven is a National Historic District, and this extra touch is very appreciated by all of us.  We thank Public Works and RAM Construction.

The actual project was to replace 100 year old sewer and water pipes under 12th Street, with work starting back in July.  It involved replacing the manholes - the entire underground concrete structures - and tearing up curbing.  As such, the street needed to be rebuilt, along with much curbing.  The final result is beautiful and should last us many decades.

Thanks are due to Mark C. Handzlik, Public Works Engineer for the project, for keeping all the Fairhaven businesses up to date on construction progress.  Thanks also to Todd Baker, the Public Works inspector who was here every day making sure all went correctly.  Thanks to RAM Construction, to owner Mike Hammes, and to his construction supervisor Mitch Pelzer for the beautiful end result.

I will be posting a full gallery of construction photos over by next few days.  A link will be placed here.

Fairhaven overwhelmed by Goblins and Princesses

<< Back to archives | Sunday, October 31, 2010

What was most amazing wasn’t how many little goblins and princesses there were - but how polite they all were.  As I went up and down the streets, the parents coached their kids to say ‘thank you’.  The little ones did not grab, they asked by saying “trick or treat”.  The sidewalks were jammed and yet everyone adjusted and gave others needed room.  One couple I talked to said they were struck with the politeness and it sort of brought it home to me.  Yes, the historic streets of Fairhaven were jammed with thousands of kids and their parents this afternoon, but they all enjoyed themselves.

Fairhaven professional photographer, Mark Turner, has posted dozens of his photos of Trick or Treaters in Fairhaven.  We thank Mark.

James Might of Renaissance Celebration Gallery sat in his usual overstuffed chair at his front door, as he does every year.

At the Fairhaven Pharmacy, Gordie Tweit was taking photos as he has since 1963.

The photos Gordie takes are available free for pickup at the pharmacy starting later this week.

Up at 12th Street Shoes, little Kaleigh got into giving out the candy to other little ones.

Everyone was in costume and having fun.  Diane plants a kiss on Rich.

At Covet Boutique, in McKenzie Alley, Sally sat on one of her unusual pieces and met the little ones.

Yep, that is the last piece of candy.  Neal of Katie’s Cupcakes started with 1,800 pieces of candy at 3 pm.  At about 5:30, this little cutie got the last one.  Fairhaven merchants very much enjoy getting into the fun of Halloween.  We invite you back next year.

Today, Sunday, 3 - 6 pm is Treats in Fairhaven

<< Back to archives | Monday, October 25, 2010

From 3 to 6 pm on Sunday, October 31, is Trick or Treat time on the historic streets of Fairhaven.  Sunday - as October 31 is Halloween.  The merchants of Fairhaven invite all the little goblins and ghosts, pirates and princesses, zombies and - well all the little ones to bring their parents to Fairhaven for treats.  No tricks necessary.  The owners of the shops and restaurants are stocking up on sweet treats.  They are decorating their windows.  They will be ready.  The photo above is from last year’s Trick or Treating.

Gordie Tweit will be taking photos at the Fairhaven Pharmacy starting about 2:30 pm and continuing until done.  Last year that was after 7 pm.  This is a gift to the community by the staff of the Fairhaven Pharmacy and Gordie.  He has been doing it for about 45 years.  Yep - kids who had their photos taken then are now bringing in their grand children.  The photos are free and can be picked up during November at the counter in the Pharmacy.

See you Sunday afternoon.

Street work will add safety & ambience

All summer our streets have been getting the 100 year old sewer and water pipes replaced.  Bellingham Public Works has contracted to RAM Construction and together they have been carefully doing the work in sections so as to keep our traffic moving.  While all the shop owners are ready for the work to be done, they have all expressed their appreciation for how the city and RAM have tried so hard to minimize disruptions.  And, if the weather is decent, it may well all be done by Halloween.

Above photo shows removal of the center strip of bricks on Harris Avenue where it crosses 12th Street - our main intersection.  The bricks were used to separate the trolley tracks a hundred years ago and have been covered by the asphalt road way for decades.  Now they are being carefully dug up and will be laid down across the intersection on top of the asphalt when repaving is done in a couple weeks.  This is a very appreciated extra task that Bellingham Public Works decided to do at the request of the Old Fairhaven Association president Stephanie Johnson.  While the repaving of 12th and intersections will improve safety in Fairhaven - with new curbs and crosswalks - the brick strip will add a small but very visible bit of ambience.  We thank the city and RAM Construction.

New Persian Carpets at Fairhaven Rug Gallery

Fairhaven Rug Gallery has just received 700 new Persian rugs.  That is 10,000 pounds of rugs.  All in the past few days.  Here we see Heather inventorying a stack of the new rugs, as she is literally surrounded by magnificent, beautiful rugs.  And this view is only a fraction of all the rugs in the gallery.  It is just an amazing experience to enter this gallery for the first time.

Gallery owner Arshia has just come back from a 7 week buying trip to Iran.  He managed to get this shipment cleared for export into the U.S. on September 28, the last day before our country imposed an embargo on all Iranian rug imports.  These carpets were actually flown from Europe by Air France to Seattle where Arshia took delivery of them.  It took quite a bit of effort and skill to get these from Iran to his gallery here in Fairhaven.  Arshia and Heather Fathali invite you to visit their gallery, open Tuesdays through Sundays and Mondays by appointment.

Yes, Gordie Tweit will be taking photos again this Halloween of all the little goblins and ghosts.  And it will again be at the Fairhaven Pharmacy, where he was our pharmacist for many decades until his retirement.  Each year since about 1963 he has taken free photos of the little ones, posted them in the pharmacy windows for a week and then made them available for pickup by the kids or parents.  We talked with him today and he said that, yes, he will be doing it again.

All the Fairhaven merchants will be giving out treats from 3 to 6 pm on Sunday afternoon, October 31.  Yes, even though it is a Sunday, that is Halloween.  No other evening will do.  We invite parents from anywhere to bring the little ones to the historic streets for a fun time.

Here we see Gordie surrounded by his historic pharmacy artifacts and memorabilia.  It is a valued experience for many in Fairhaven to have heard him explain the history of any of the things in his personal museum.  He has also been an accurate chronicler of Fairhaven events and history for well over 50 years.  And, you know, he is just the finest fellow.  We all love him.

Weather breaks for Salmon BBQ & Sidewalk Sale

<< Back to archives | Saturday, September 18, 2010

The Saturday morning rain stopped and the day became sunny and warm for the annual Sidewalk Sale and Salmon BBQ in Fairhaven.  Once the day’s events were over, the rains started about 6 pm.  The weather break made for a great afternoon in Fairhaven, the streets crowded with folks finding bargains on tables on the sidewalk in front of shops.  And in the Village Green, almost 300 salmon dinners were sold out by shortly after 3 pm.

Above is the chef Bryant Davis on the right with his assistant John on the left.  Bryant is a Realtor with Re/Max in Bellingham and donated his skills to help out the Fairhaven Community.  He did a superb job on the wild King Salmon fillets from Vis Seafoods on James Street.  We sincerely thank him.  And we want to thank Kyle Bornstein and Bornstein Seafoods for the effort to get us fresh caught this week wild Kings from our own waters in the Salish Sea near Fairhaven.

Three of the dozen volunteers who helped make the salmon bbq a success.  From left, Katherine serving corn on the cob from Joe’s Gardens, Janice with the salmon and Pam spooning up cole slaw from Skylarks.  Avenue bread provided all the rolls - see the photo gallery.

Katie of Katie’s Cupcakes with a selection of the deserts.  She donated 300 cupcakes and everyone got to choose the size and flavor they preferred.  A superb treat.

There is a gallery of 10 photos of the BBQ and volunteers

<< Back to archives | Saturday, September 11, 2010

Started only six years ago, the Fairhaven Runners 15K Waterfront 15K Run and Walk has become huge with over 700 participants starting this morning at 8:30 am.  The historic 1800s buildings provided a beautiful frame for the runners going up 11th Street on their way along the Bellingham waterfront towards the Squalicum Small Boat Harbor.  The run is relatively flat and very scenic.  On the way back they run along the Taylor Dock that goes over the water.

Enjoy the Photo Gallery with 24 images of the day’s event.

You can check the race results at the Fairhaven Runners website.

Ballet of Fairhaven & Chinese Theme in Production

<< Back to archives | Tuesday, September 7, 2010

The Northwest Ballet of Bellingham is producing a ballet on the theme of the Chinese in historic Fairhaven back in the 1880s. The ballet will not be historically accurate but will explore the racial relationship that was here in the late 1800s and early 1900s.  While this part of our Fairhaven history is one that many prefer to sweep under the rug, it is part of our heritage and many of us feel it should be researched and documented.  This ballet will explore the emotions and conflicts in the tradition of Romeo and Juliet and other history based plays and ballets.  The core issues will be carefully handled.  And it has a happy ending.  Plus old Dirty Dan Harris and his opposite, Chinese “uncle” Goon Dip, come off as wise fellows who help defuse tensions.

The Old Fairhaven Association Board of Directors has reviewed the preliminary script and has voted to help sponsor it with their endorsement.  NW Ballet leaders, Production Manager Christopher Wise and Artistic Director and Choreographer John Bishop, are hard at work on the sets and planning.  In the photo above is Amber Johnson, in a previous NW Ballet production. Even Mark Twain will have a part in this ballet.  Ahh, but we will provide more information later.  The ballet is scheduled for first performance in June 2011.
