Halloween Photos Posted

Wednesday, November 5, 2003

About 500 photos of little Halloween characters are posted in the windows of the Fairhaven Pharmacy. Gordy Tweit took the portraits and Spinnaker Photo donated the processing. They are on display through next Monday. You can go find your child’s photo.

Parents can pick up the photos from the Pharmacy after they are taken down next week. No charge.

Brrrr Bocce

Monday, November 3, 2003

It started last summer, during the long warm sunny Monday evenings. Now, they don’t seem to know when to quit for the winter. Yep, they brought out floodlignts on the Village Green this evening. Temperature? 37 degrees when this photo was taken - and dropping. Yes, they plan to play again next Monday, Nov 10 at 5 pm. Anyone can join them. No experience needed.

Halloween for Litttle Goblins on the Streets of Fairhaven

Friday, October 31, 2003

The streets of Historic Fairhaven were alive with hundreds of young goblins, ghosts, fairies, monsters and characters this afternoon and evening. Here, the kids run up Harris Ave to the next shop for trick or treating.

More Halloween photos on the Halloween 2003 page.

Autumn Decor in Fairhaven

Friday, October 17, 2003

The shops and restaurants in Fairhaven are getting their Halloween decorations. Above is the Blue Moon Salon on 10th. All over the Historic District, business owners are preparing for our big trick-or-treat evening for the little ones. Adults will also get a kick from the wild motifs that will be on display for Friday and as far into the weekend as the weather allows.

Warm September Days

Saturday, September 27, 2003

Rick Brugger has been playing his steel drums next to Jacci’s Fish & Chips most every Saturday all summer. Summer continues today, with temperatures in the 70s. His mellow sounds float off a couple blocks, giving a nice background ambience to our streets.

A word about Rick. He is also a jazz musician. He taught himself to play the steel drums, but has yet to visit the Caribbean. I worked down there one wonderful winter and can tell you his playing is top notch. I want to give him a little plug here. You can book Rick for events. His phone is 676-8747. Thanks, Rick, for your sweet sounds all summer.

End of the Season for Market

Wednesday, September 24, 2003

The Farmers Market on the Village Green is over ‘til next June. Only a few of the vendors were there this afternoon, but they did a brisk business. The Green was perfect for the market. There is hope and plans for making next summer even better with a greater variety of foods. Farmers and vendors loved the glass roofs, which allowed the light through to show off the produce, foods and crafts.

Remember that Rusty Skeleton?

Thursday, September 11, 2003

They took the scaffolding down yesterday and lo - a beautiful new building - named Fairhaven Square - in the 1200 block of Harris Ave. The rusty skeleton of steel girders that stood for 28 years has been transformed. Normally, these construction photos are posted on the Buzz page, but this is special. There are 22 condos on the upper floors and a restaurant and shops on the first floor with basement parking. See the bright yellow banner- that is where the Coppa Bistro restaurant will open this autumn. Ebenal General, the owner and construction company, is to be commended for not only a beautiful building but also for protecting the street trees. That took extra effort, and we in Fairhaven appreciate it.

Harvest Dinner on Village Green

Sunday, September 7, 2003

Over 200 folks on the Village Green sat down for the Harvest Dinner this Saturday afternoon. In a first, the Green hosted a feast - the 4th annual dinner sponsored by Whatcom Fresh, which promotes locally grown and raised food in our Whatcom County. Yet another use for our Green.

The cooks were very busy in a compact temporary kitchen area. They prepared an eight-course meal, including reef-netted salmon from Lummi Island.

The tables are set.
The cooks are busy. The weather looks great. There are tickets and seats at the table still available. An 8-course dinner for 200 is being prepared. Come to the Village Green and enjoy.

Two Runs Benefit In Need Kids

Saturday, September 6, 2003

The Blue Skies for Children foot race starts off on 11th Steet in Fairhaven. More than 80 people ran the enjoyable 4.5 miles of this benefit for homeless, low income, and foster children in Whatcom County. There are almost 6,000 children living below the poverty level in Whatcom County. Steve Rugoski, owner of Fairhaven Runners, helped organize, promote and started the races.

Yep, these four little ones
ran and walked the mile to help benefit other kids. This event will be held again next year, and we hope more young ones will participate.

Packed Village Green for Movie

Sunday, August 31, 2003

On stage, singer Dana Lyons entertains the crowd before sunset and the movie “Hook”. Saturday night, the largest crowd of the summer filled the Village Green during another perfect summer evening. It is estimated over 800 people attended. The photo was taken well before the maximum crowd was reached after sunset.

The Tall Ship Lady Washington Visited Fairhaven

Sunday, August 24, 2003

She was here for six days - from Tuesday thru Saturday, Aug 19-24 - and thousands went over her decks as she was docked in Fairhaven at the Cruise Terminal. About 200 of us got to go out on Bellingham Bay aboard her. Those lucky ones on the Friday evening sail got an experience of a lifetime as she sailed the Bay in strong breezes, as shown below.

We thank the Lady Washington Captain and crew for their great hospitality and six days of free tours of their ship. We hope you will come back again next year for at least a few days.

Bound for Bellingham

Friday, August 22, 2003

The Lady Washington sails Bellingham Bay. The Friday evening cruise was spectacular as the tall ship sailed across Bellingham Bay and back, right up to the hills of town before coming about. The skipper showed great sailing skill as he took the paying guests on a great sail around the Bay. Winds were 15 mph with nice gusts to 20, perfect for this ship to show her heels.

A perfect place to watch the ship sailing is Boulevard Park. She will be out sailing on Saturday from 3 to 6 pm and Sunday from 2 to 5 pm. She departs Bellingham Sunday evening or Monday morning

Onboard a Tall Ship

Thursday, August 21, 2003

All 45 of us aboard enjoyed the three-hour drift on Bellingham Bay. There was hardly a breeze - but it was fascinating the entire time. Those lucky ones scheduled for sailing Friday, Saturday and Sunday have a better chance of wind and actual sailing.

The tall ship Lady Washington has magic. While the three more sailings are sold out, you can go aboard her while at the dock and spend time exploring her. Free. Every child will love the chance to see her. We adults should make extra effort to help all kids visit her. You can take the city bus right to the Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven.

Sails and the Cruise Terminal

Wednesday, August 20, 2003

The tall rig of the Lady Washington towers above the dock of the Bellingham Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven. A neat contrast. Free tours are being offered all week long, ending Sunday afternoon. Be sure and give any kids you know a chance to tour this ship. There is no excuse for any child to miss out. Free tour. The city buses run right to the Cruise Terminal every hour. Kids have much to gain from such a tour.

The Ship ‘HMS Interceptor’

Tuesday, August 19, 2003

This is the ship ‘HMS Interceptor’ in the movie ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, now playing at the Sunset Cinema and starring Johnny Depp. She is really the brig Lady Washington from Aberdeen in our Washington State, a close authentic reconstruction of the first US ship to explore the Pacific Northwest coast in the 1790s.

Every child should have the chance to tour. All ages are welcome on board. You can visit the Lady Washington website for more information.

Walking the Decks of a Tall Ship

She is at the Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven till Sunday afternoon, offering daily free tours of the ship.

Above is a view of the main deck from the quarter deck. You can go where you want and pause to imagine the adventures of sailing on such a ship.

Touring the Alaska Ferry

Friday, August 15, 2003

The annual open ship on the Alaska Ferry ‘Columbia’ was well attended today. This photo shows the folks touring the bridge. The ship is over 400 feet long and takes over 600 people and over 100 cars to Alaska from the Fairhaven terminal every Friday of the year. While summer is the busiest season, fall and winter passages are spectacular and fun also. Check the Alaska Ferry website for more info.

Kids and Water

Tuesday, August 12, 2003

Thirsty dogs need to wait in line. These summer days, there are always kids working the water pump and splashing water at the pet watering hole on the Village Green. Moms can be seen enjoying a book on one of the benches and keeping an eye on the action. The statue of Dan Harris keeps a constant vigil when he isn’t being climbed all over by kids. Hanging out on the Village Green.

Kayaking with the Kids

Sunday, August 10, 2003

Meanwhile, three blocks downhill, the waterfront continues its summer activity. Fairhaven Boatworks was busy renting out kayaks and sailboats.

A breeze moved over Bellingham Bay.
You know, the boatworks is open every day except Monday for renting out small boats. You can go out into the Bay or you can stay in and explore along the Bellingham shoreline. We should all do this once during the summer. Stop and smell the roses, as the saying goes.

The Bellingham Festival of Music Comes to the Village Green

Sunday, August 10, 2003

We are honored and delighted. The Greta Matassa Quartet, participating in the festival, played to a very appreciative audience of several hundred on the Village Green Sunday afternoon. The weather was perfect August - sunny and warm. The music wafted all over Fairhaven. We thank the Fairhaven Market for sponsoring this afternoon of first-class jazz.

Double Take

Thursday, August 7, 2003

I happened by Lanny Little updating the mural on the Village Green. The construction of the Green left the former painting of himself suspended above the ground, so he is repainting it. He will also paint several people into windows who were buried by construction. And he is repainting the donor names on the wall. You can catch him over the next few days carefully touching up the mural.

Farmer’s Market Color and Beauty

Wednesday, August 6, 2003

The Farmer’s Market each Wednesday afternoon is a delightful place for browsing. The wooden pergola provides the beautiful setting. The vegetables, flowers and crafts provide the reason. The vendors and shoppers provide the ambience. Every Wednesday from 3 pm to 7 pm through the end of September. Come down and enjoy.

Did you know that photos and news are also posted on The Buzz? This home page is for public events and photos showing the fun in Fairhaven. The Buzz has inside news, gossip, rumor and fun stuff that is of interest to those who live in or near Fairhaven.  If you have a continuing interest in what is happening in Fairhaven, then you want to check The Buzz.

Jazz On The Green

Monday, August 4, 2003

Ahhh - summer concerts in the park. Paul Sorensen leads the Northern Lights Jazz Orchestra on Sunday afternoon. The peak of summer is time to make sure you pause and enjoy some of those pleasures unique to these very warm days.

The Village Green offers you many events this week. Check the Green Sheet for what appeals to you. This week is especially rich in quality events - Shakespeare, college summer stock play, classic movie, and another jazz concert next Sunday. Very quality fare - worth a drive to Fairhaven even from Seattle or Vancouver. The Village Green is proving a most charming venue for all sorts of activities. We invite you to visit. Especially this week.

Shakespeare On The Green

Tuesday, July 29, 2003

“The Comedy of Errors” was presented by the Western Washington University drama department on the Village Green this evening. With the wooden pergola posts reflected by the props of Greek columns of Ephesus, the park provided an intimate setting for the comedy. The play will be presented again next Tuesday, August 5. See the Events in Fairhaven for other plays and events on the Green.

Summer Sunday Evening

Sunday, July 27, 2003

Sunday evening on the Fairhaven waterfront. The boat launch dock has steady activity as people come and go in their boats. Coming back from a weekend in the San Juan Islands or going out for a little sunset cruise on Bellingham Bay. Way in the background you can see the pilings of the Taylor Avenue Dock - soon to be renovated.

‘Ground Breaking’ Ceremony

Friday, July 25, 2003

Pulling up the first rusted iron debris, the heads of city and state agencies joined to pull it up by a rope. The ceremony, held this noon, marked the start of the reconstruction of the Taylor Avenue Dock. Work will begin immediately and will be a flurry of activity for the rest of the summer. The construction season is governed by salmon swimming habits.

Thanks To All Who Helped

Paul Leuthold, Bellingham Parks Director, was the Master of Ceremonies for the event. He thanked the many agencies and people who have worked years to make the project happen. $2.5 million in City and Greenways funds are behind the project, which has literally been 24 years in the planning. The project could - possibly - be finished by this November, 2003. Or, it could be February 2005 if there are surprises for the contractors and work has to be put on hold for up to 10 months at a time.

Harris Bay on a Summer Morn

Thursday, July 24, 2003

With Lummi Island and Orcas Island in the distance, a Washington State Ferry in for maintenance, the Alaska Cruise Terminal ready for tomorrow’s ferry and sailboats moored in the sheltered bay, the Fairhaven waterfront is a beautiful and tranquil scene.

Taylor Avenue Dock Work Begins

Thursday, July 24, 2003

Tomorrow, Friday at 12 noon sharp, will be the Ground Breaking ceremony at 10th Street and Taylor Avenue for the restoration of the dock. Years in the planning, the Bellingham Parks Department will build a boardwalk connecting Boulevard Park and Fairhaven.

Man From Past Plays Bocce

Monday, July 21, 2003

Dirty Dan Harris, the founder of Fairhaven in 1853, paid the Village Green a visit Monday afternoon and showed us his skill at Bocce Ball. Each Monday afternoon at 5 pm, people show up to play the game, with several being folks who have never played before. The Bocce courts have been provided by Tom McNutt, who sells them through his Boccemon website. Rumor has it a nearby restaurant is purchasing a court they will rent out. Dan, portrayed by Tip Johnson, was pretty good. He did doff those woolens after the photo was taken. It was 82 degrees on the Village Green.

Painting the Terminal Building

Wednesday, July 16, 2003

Painting the frieze on the Terminal Building, Edmund Alexander focuses on the delicate work. Built in 1888, it is the oldest commercial building in Fairhaven. It is now home for Tony’s Coffee and the Harris Avenue Cafe. Workers are cleaning, repairing and painting all the wood on the building. This flag is not on top of the building, but a block away.

More Bocce on the Green

Monday, July 14, 2003

Games again this Monday, July 21, at 5 pm.
Everyone and all ages welcome.
We expect even Dirty Dan Harris to play a game.

Bocce ball is becoming a weekly event on the Village Green. It was built and they came. Today at 5 pm they showed up again. Nothing organized - yet. Some folks who stopped to watch were soon playing. Rumor has it the balls and portable courts may soon be rental from a business bordering the Green. And I admit to unabashed promotion of the game on this page. But it is so perfect for the green - and builds community as we meet new folks each time. What more invitation do you need?

Going North To Alaska

Friday, July 11, 2003

Campers and RVs drive on - or rather into - the Alaska Ferry ‘Columbia’ at the Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven on Friday. A steady stream of campers loaded in the late afternoon. ‘Tis the season when vacationers from all over the USA and the world come to Fairhaven and go north to Alaska. Two ships a week go north during the summer, with the first stop at Ketchikan, Alaska, 36 hours out of Fairhaven. Come on down at 6 pm on any Tuesday or Friday and enjoy the send-off of the Alaska Ferry.

Farmer’s Market Grows

Wednesday, July 9, 2003

The Wednesday Farmer’s Market on the Village Green continues to grow in popularity with both vendors and shoppers. All 21 booths are now filled and tents are appearing on the Green. Every booth has folks on a constant basis. The Market runs 3 to 7 pm every Wednesday through September.

Bocce Ball in Fairhaven

Monday, July 7, 2003

Attn: Join us Mon, July 14 at 5 pm to try Bocce.

They play it on town greens in every country in the world, and the game goes back thousands of years. This evening it was introduced to our Village Green. Above, two games are in progress. We are hoping that these portable game sets will be available soon for rental from a shop bordering the Green.

That winning form.
Chuck Robinson, who is co-owner of Village Books, tries out Bocce. The idea is to toss - roll - your ball closer to the small white ball than your opponents. Good luck, Chuck. (He can also knock the other ball out.) Twenty or so of us tried out the game this evening and found it more fun than it appeared to be when watching. We hope it becomes availabe to all on the Village Green.

Town Criers Speak OUT

Thursday, July 3, 2003

Dressed in authentic colonial clothes, several Town Criers visited our Village Green today and gave impressive demonstrations of the human ability to speak loudly and clearly. In days of old, town criers were needed in every town. Today, the skill is kept up and passed on by the few. Criers from Anacortes, Nanaimo, La Conner and even England showed us their abilities on the Village Green.

We don’t have a crier for Fairhaven. Maybe someone will learn the skill and volunteer. Today, they offer their services for birthdays, weddings, exhibitions, opening ceremonies and all sorts of special occasions.

Yes! Vancouver 2010

Wednesday, July 2, 2003

This morning the International Olympic Committee announced Vancouver will host the 2010 Winter Olympics.

For over a year, this website has supported their bid. We would benefit from tourism - starting this summer - just the type of business we love.

Just an hour north of Fairhaven, we feel part of the effort. You can follow the process at our Vancouver / Whistler page. You can sign up as a supporter at a special page at the Vancouver Committee web site.

Fairhaven’s Newest Coffee Bistro

Saturday, June 28, 2003

Shipwrecked Coffee is now open, with the finest waterfront view in Fairhaven. Open 8 am till 6 pm every day of the week through the summer. Whether you work in Fairhaven or are visiting, this is an experience you will really enjoy. Where is it? Behind Fairhaven Boatworks, located down Harris Avenue and next to the boat launch ramp. Not the heart of Fairhaven, but you just have to check this out.
