The facility also offers classes on a regular basis. August brings a study of dragonflies. These active insects play out their lives in a world that is all around us, yet is seldom noticed. Skagit Audubon offers this short course on dragonflies, consisting of two evening classroom sessions followed by a field trip. *Class I, Thursday, 8/21, 7-8:30 p.m.: Dragonfly biology, habitats, and behavior, observing and photographing dragonflies. *Class II, Thursday, 8/ 28, 7-8:30 p.m.: Identification of common dragonflies in Washington State, field marks, range, flight seasons, identification practice using photos of local dragonflies. *Field Trip, Saturday, 8/30: Time of day and location to be determined. From way-finding marks along the trail, to graffiti announcing "Kilroy was here" to messages of yearning for loved ones left behind, travelers have sketched, painted, and written about the inner journey of leaving home. Tuesday, September 2 || 6pm || freeLiterature Live at Village Books: an Introduction to Laura Kalpakian’s Memoir Writing ClassJoin award-winning and much-honored novelist and story writer Laura Kalpakian, who lives in Bellingham and who has been a part of the writing faculty of both WWU, UW and WWU's extended programs. Kalpakian will shareabout the writing journey of a lifetime and talk about her upcoming classes. Laura Kalpakian, a master of story and character, has received a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, a Pushcart Prize, the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Award (twice), and a PEN/West Award for the Best Short Fiction, among other honors. And her novel Gracedland was made into a TV-film produced by and starring Roseanne Barr. In addition to Memoir Club, Steps and Exes, Educating Waverley and others, Kalpakian's recent novel, American Cookery, is just recently in paperback. Raise extra for Whatcom Hospice FoundationChuckanut Century Ride for HospiceThe Mount Baker Bicycle Club sponsors this big community ride--for all paces and abilities-- in support of the Whatcom Hospice Foundation. There is a choice of routes from 25, 50, 62, 100 or 124 miles (a metric double century ride), with many riders going through Fairhaven between 7-9am, and later again in the afternoon. The routes encompass the beautiful roads and scenery of Bellingham Bay, Chuckanut Drive, and Whatcom & Skagit counties. More information and registration details is available through the Mt.
