February Amazing Artists

02/01/2012 - 02/29/2012

This February, the Colophon Cafe is proud to showcase the talent of two local artists, Vikki Jackson and Elli Anderson.  See below for their artist statements.  Come on down and feast your eyes and your hunger this month.

Artist Statement for Vikki Anderson:

I love to paint with acrylics. I use acrylics to build layer upon layer of pigment intermixed with texture. Color is used sparingly and only where needed to enhance the final piece.

The presented works focus on shape formed by native northwest birds and cats. Although at first the subjects may seem opposite in nature, but they both present fascinating shapes we are all familiar with. In these works I play with the positive and negative spaces to create an interesting image with minimal color.

I believe these recent images reflect my long relationship working with the natural world as a field ecologist in the northwest. Inspiration comes from many sources including our stunning, but often bleak northwest landscapes, and by regional painters such as Richard Gilkey of the Northwest School, Trish Harding and working with artists at Studio UFO.

Elli Anderson is the creator of Fantasmagorical Dreams, her personal
collection of art that is fantastic, amazing, and magical.

Elli is a local bellingham artist and has designed and sold T-shirts and
coloring books in the pacific northwest area while also designing shirts for
the Semiahmoo Marina. Elli has used a variety of mediums and materials,
seeing potential in old art supplies and random objects and turning it into
unusual and vivid art. She gives the saying "one person's garbage is another
person's treasure" a whole new meaning.

The Fantasmagorical Dreams collection ranges from detailed ink drawings to
multi-medium and multi-textured creations. Elli has experimented with
different ideas (including beach glass and shells) in hopes to find new ways
to use the junk laying around the house. The results are elaborate and
visually stimulating art pieces while still promoting "renew, reuse,
recycle."
