Awesome Girls Night Out

Friday, May 11

Girls Night Out was an incredible success this evening, with hundreds of women - and some men - making it a success.  The event is a fundraiser for the Peace Health Cancer Research Center in Bellingham.  Auctions, raffles and a fashion show plus music, great food treats - Papa’s Sweets was there - and group photos by Mark Turner.

Above is the fashion show just getting underway in the dome room of the Alaska Ferry Terminal.  MCs Shannon Day and Brian Finnegan kept the fun chatter going all evening.  This was the 7th annual of GNO and it has slowly evolved over the years, with this year being the biggest yet.  A tip of the hat to the Old Fairhaven Association and their organizers Cathy Lee, Pamela Felke, Katie Swanson, Shannon Day, David Starr and several others.

The upper level of the Ferry Terminal as folks filled out silent auction forms, sampled sweets, enjoyed drinks, and bought raffles for everything from cupcakes, nights for two at hotels, dinner at Fairhaven restaurants, bicycles and most everything you might like to win.  The color of the evening was pink and the theme was “Lets Get Physlcal” and the 1980s.

Earlier in the evening, fun things were happening up in the Fairhaven historic district.  At Skylark’s restaurant, for a donation to cancer research, the girls had their photos taken with local firemen who were donating their time.  You can check the Girls Night Out website for more information.  And plan to attend the 8th annual GNO in 2013.

Urban Living in Historic Fairhaven

Tuesday, May 8

A quiet and relaxing roof top patio garden is one of the enjoyable benefits of living at the Fairhaven Gardens Condos.  Located in the heart of the historic district, this five story condo complex has several roof top patio gardens.  This one is on the third floor and they are also on the fourth and fifth floors.

This garden is also award winning.  For the second year, the Whatcom County in Bloom gave the condo its First Place for apartments/condominiums.  First in the county.  We congratulate the owner/residents for their recognition.  And a tip of the hat to the builder of this interesting condo, David Ebenal and his Ebenal General construction company.

There are several condo buildings either in the historic district or within a block or two.  Living is slower in Fairhaven and the district is a fun place to live.  There are frequent book readings at Village Books, dining at over a dozen restaurants, events on the Village Green, and the transportation center down by the waterfront for Amtrak and Greyhound, plus San Juan cruises in the San Juan Islands. All within easy walking distance.  Living in Fairhaven - in beautiful buildings.  Pretty nice.

Great fun at Dirty Dan Day Seafood Festival

Sunday, April 29

Cupcake eating contests could be considered a spectator sport.  At least on the annual Dirty Dan Day in Fairhaven.  Here we see the adult contest sponsored each year by Katie’s Cupcakes on Harris Avenue.  A lot of folks came down to Fairhaven to enjoy great seafood and dishes and some fun contests.  Besides cupcakes, there was the salmon toss, Dirty Dan look-a-like and the 1890s dress to impress.

We thank many for the success of this day.  First, though, we thank the weather.  The sun came out and the day warmed up.  By Northwest standards, it was a premium day.  We also thank Anna Williams and her staff of Jordan, Carla, Ellen and Hillary.  We thank the Granges from Haynie, Rome and Ten Mile for volunteering all day.  We thank Ram Construction for their help.  And we thank the 10 restaurants that participated in the Chuckanut Chowder Cookoff.

New Fairhaven Map brochure is available

Tuesday, April 10

Now available, the 2012 Fairhaven Map brochure.  Watch for it and pick one up.  If you enjoy Fairhaven, then this brochure has a superb walking map that you will find helpful.  It highlights restaurants, shops, parks, trails, historic buildings and markers - and has a new timeline of Fairhaven history.  And, you probably already identified the cover painting is by Ben Mann, our unofficial Fairhaven treasure and painter.

Also new to this year’s brochure are two more historic buildings built in 1890, making a total of 12 buildings with photos and rewritten historical information.  Penny Tillson, who wrote so much of Fairhaven’s history with her late husband Tyrone back some 20 years ago, is back and editing the old descriptions with new information.  Taimi Gorman has provided us with haunted information for many of the buildings - and it is included in the brochure.  And Jeff Jewel of the Whatcom Museum photo archive has again allowed us to print photos of many of the buildings as they appeared a hundred years ago.

Many people enjoy finding and reading the 39 historical markers throughout the district.  Well, Penny has edited a full list of them and Larry Morris of Town Graphics has placed red pin markers on the map where all the markers are.  Of course Penny did the field work looking for markers that Tyrone placed back in the 1980s.  Tyrone was then a member of the Old Fairhaven Association (OFA) and the city provided a grant to place all the markers.  Now the remaining ones are listed on the map.  He originally placed 46 markers.

We want to thank Larry Morris of Town Graphics for working with several of us in the OFA to make so many improvements to the map for this year.  And we thank Lithtex Printing of Bellingham for the outstanding job on the maps.  We love that they were printed locally.  We almost ran out of the25,000 maps printed in 2011 maps and so Larry agreed to print 30,000 this year at no increase in rates.  We appreciate that.

The OFA paid to include the historical information in the brochure and manages the distribution.  Pam Went, of the OFA, does the distribution in the historic district.  If your business would like to have a counter display with the Walking Maps, just email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and let us know.
